Based on the travel notes of volunteers, reporters and travelers, who visited Serbia in the last third of XIX – early XX century, the article reveals the potential of this type of historical source for ethnographic studies. Among the observations recorded by the authors, one finds valuable information on the ethnic specificity of the Serbian society, the peculiarities of the rural life and of the peasant lifestyle, as well as on the processes that affected the traditional culture on the eve of the era of modern times.
